WELCOME TO NANAIMO

Nanaimo, the “Harbour City” is the second largest city on Vancouver Island with a population of about 72,000 people. It is located about a 1 &1/2 hours drive north of Victoria and a 1& 1/2 hours ferry ride from Vancouver. Regular flights are available from either the Nanaimo Airport or the inner Harbour.

Nanaimo has a very moderate climate and receives annual precipitation about 35 inches (89 cm), mostly in the winter. In winter, the average daytime temperature is 3 degrees C (37 F) and 18 degrees C (65 F) in the summer. Snowfall and freezing temperatures are infrequent.

Nanaimo’s size makes it large enough to have most urban facilities but small enough to still be “small town”. It is the main shopping, business. service and transportation centre for mid and northern Vancouver Island.

The main campus of Malaspina University College with about 6000 students is located here. Also Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, the regional referral hospital, and several extended and congregate care facilities are located in Nanaimo.

Nanaimo is famous for its’ many parks and scenic waterfront with its beautiful winding promenade. Its central location in Georgia Strait make Nanaimo a favourite spot for boaters, sailors, fisherman, divers and sailboarders.

Central Vancouver Island is a golfers paradise. There are many golf courses, of all skill levels and lengths, close to Nanaimo. In winter skiing is about 1 & 1/2 hours scenic drive away at Mount Washington.

Dining and entertainment opportunities abound with the new 800 seat Port Theatre taking centre stage. Whatever your interests, Nanaimo is sure to please.
